In collaboration with the Guangdong Meteorological Bureau and the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, the Hong Kong Observatory held the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Climate Prediction Workshop in Hong Kong on 6 July 2007.
Ever since 2000, the Observatory has explored the use of regional climate model to support forecasting of short range climate. Some positive results were achieved after a few years' hard work and experiments. Starting from March 2006, seasonal forecasts and products from the regional climate model were disseminated to the public on an experimental basis. In November 2006, the Observatory took a further step to adapt a suite of global spectral model and the latest regional climate model from the Experimental Climate Prediction Center (ECPC) of the University of California at San Diego. With this suite of global-regional models, the Observatory not only got more freedom and flexibility in operating the regional model, but also broadened the potential for future research and development.
In the Workshop, the Observatory shared with colleagues from Guangdong and Macao the experience of adapting the model suite; while the two counterparts talked about their work on climate forecasting. All participants were happy with the workshop arrangement and found the workshop a good platform for experience sharing and discussion.
