Dr W T Wong, a Senior Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory, is Division Head of E-Government, Geophysics, Time and Port Meteorological Services. On the 2004 Boxing Day, a great earthquake and tsunami occurred in the Indian Ocean and brought about severe casualties in Southern Asia . For days after the disaster, Dr Wong provided information on earthquakes and tsunamis to the local media. On 31 December, Dr Wong and a filming crew from Radio Television Hong Kong went to Thailand to inspect aftermath of the disaster and film for the documentary "Meteorology Series III".
By inspecting the damages and geographic settings at various places at Phuket and Khao Lak and interviewing eye-witnesses, Dr Wong got to know more details about how the tsunami had hit the affected sites. On returning to Hong Kong , Dr Wong immediately held a briefing to share his findings with all colleagues in the Observatory. An account of his trip is given in an article in the 26th issue of Tantian Suodi - the Newsletter for Friends of the Observatory (in Chinese).
The Meteorology Series III, a joint production by the Hong Kong Observatory and the Radio Television Hong Kong, will have more on this earthquake and tsunami. Details of the broadcast schedule will be announced in due course. |
