Anemometer design competition -
Visit to the Tai Mo Shan automatic weather station
The Observatory and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Hong Kong are organizing an anemometer design competition for primary and secondary school students.  Since the competition's kick-off in September 2008, a number of activities including seminars, visits and workshops have been conducted.  On 7 March 2009, the Observatory arranged a visit to the Tai Mo Shan automatic weather station for the participants with the aim of introducing the meteorological instruments there. More than 50 teachers and students visited the weather station, which is located on the highest peak of the territory.  They happily departed from the Observatory headquarters, feeling very excited on arrival.  Their attention was soon drawn to the Observatory staff who gave an orientation on the operation of meteorological instruments there.  Ms. Choi Mee Ping, teacher from Ho Ming Primary School Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen, said: "The activity enabled the students to get a better understanding of various types of meteorological instruments and the adjudication criteria of the competition.  This would be very useful in the design and production of their entries." The competition will continue until July 2009.  For updated information and details of the competition, please visit:  http://www.cs.hku.hk/~wind/English/index.html
