Security Bureau, the Hong Kong Observatory together with 14 other relevant departments of the Government of the HKSAR participated in the 2008 Pacific-wide tsunami exercise organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO on 29 October 2008.  A total of 34 countries around the Pacific Rim took part in the exercise.  Apart from testing the notification mechanisms of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System and the Hong Kong Contingency Plan on Natural Disasters, relevant government departments of the HKSAR also exercised their emergency response procedures.

The tsunami exercise was conducted successfully on 29 October 2008.  The notification mechanisms of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System and the Hong Kong Contingency Plan on Natural Disasters functioned as desired, while other relevant departments also responded effectively.
