  • Seminar on Thundery Weather and Outdoor Operations

  • Tuesday, 24th July 2018

Thunderstorms are dangerous to outdoor workers of container terminals and the associated strong gusts also increase the risk of containers being blown down. The Observatory held a seminar on thundery weather and outdoor operations on 11 July for the operators of container terminal industry. In the seminar, Mr Lee Kwok-lun, Scientific Officer, explained the characteristics of thunderstorms and related weather phenomena, and shared the experience of monitoring and forecasting thunderstorms. The application of the Observatory’s services, including location-specific lightning alert, radar images and nowcasting products were introduced. Participants also visited the Central Forecasting Office to learn the daily operations of the Observatory’s forecasting and warning services. They indicated that the seminar helped them take appropriate measures during thunderstorms.
