The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr Kitack LIM, paid a visit to the Hong Kong Observatory’s Headquarters on 5 September 2017 and was received by the Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr SHUN Chi-ming, and his colleagues. IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for setting global standards on the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.
During the visit, Mr Lim was shown the operations of the Observatory’s Central Forecasting Office, TV Studio and Earthquake Monitoring and Tsunami Warning Centre. Mr Shun highlighted to Mr Lim the latest developments on the marine meteorological services by the Observatory in support of global shipping. Mr Lim was most impressed by the Observatory’s untiring efforts in partnering with the shipping companies to install weather sensors on board the Voluntary Observing Ships and to deploy drifting buoys to enhance weather observation over the oceans. He commended the highly efficient workforce of the Observatory for providing quality weather services to the maritime community and the public.
