  • Tuesday, 22nd November 2016

Mr. Dickson Lau and Mr. Hung Fan-yiu, Senior Experimental Officers of the Observatory, participated in the “Roving Seminar” organized by the Typhoon Committee on 15-17 November 2016 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The main theme of the seminar this year is “Storm Surge”. Apart from the participants from the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting of Vietnam, 11 representatives from various meteorological services and academic institutes in the Asia-Pacific region also took part in the seminar.

Dickson Lau was one of the speakers at the seminar, delivering lectures on the development of the Observatory’s “Operation Storm Surge Forecasting System” and sharing his experience in the application of storm surge numerical models. The other two speakers at the seminar were Mr. Arthur Taylor from the U.S. National Weather Services and Mr. Nadao Kohno from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

In addition to the discussion of knowledge and historical impacts relating to storm surges, the seminar also had practical sessions through which participants could obtain hands-on experience in operating storm surge models and learn more about the latest development in storm surge numerical prediction techniques.
