  • Monday, 11th March 2019

Meteorologists from the Guangdong Meteorological Service, Macao Geophysical and Meteorological Bureau and Hong Kong Observatory gathered in Hong Kong to attend the 33rd Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Seminar on Meteorological Science and Technology and the 24th Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Meeting on Cooperation in Meteorological Operations on 6 to 8 March 2019. Representatives from the Hainan Meteorological Service and Guangxi Meteorological Service attended the meeting for the first time, setting a milestone for extending regional meteorological cooperation.

This is the first meeting after the promulgation of the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao Greater Bay Area”. Built on past success, the meeting opened new areas of collaboration. The three parties exchanged views on meteorological developments in the Greater Bay Area and also strategies to cope with extreme weather that is becoming more frequent under the effect of climate change. The meeting agreed to step up cooperation, improve information network and data exchange, and enhance the exchange and development of observation and forecast technology.

In view of the significant impact of Super Typhoon Mangkhut to the region in 2018, the Seminar included a special session for Mangkhut for sharing of experiences on observation, forecast and warning, and also communication with the media. In the era of big data and rapid development of artificial intelligence, there were also considerable discussions on smart weather at the Seminar.
