The Hong Kong Observatory organized an international workshop on "Implementation of the IWXXM for the Exchange of OPMET Data" in collaboration with the Voluntary Cooperation Programme (VCP) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Asia Pacific Office during 10 - 12 October 2017.
The aim of the workshop is to strengthen participants' capability to kick start their own implementation project. In the workshop, Dr. Steve Foreman from WMO, Mr. Peter Dunda from ICAO Asia Pacific Office, Mr. Aaron Braeckel from National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) of the United States, Mr Tim Hailes from Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), Australia and Mr. Boon-leung Choy from the Observatory introduced the latest development and implementation of IWXXM. In addition, Ms. Sue O'Rourke from BoM and Mr. Patrick Simon from Meteo France also shared their experience on IWXXM with the participants through video conferences.
The workshop was attended by more than 50 experts of national meteorological or civil aviation organizations who were responsible for aviation meteorological data exchange, including those from Australia, Bangladesh, China, France, Iraq, Japan, Hong Kong China, Kenya, Lao PDR, Macao China, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, New Zealand, The Philippines, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United States and Vietnam, and active participation from colleagues of the Observatory as well. Participants were of the view that the workshop was crucial in preparing themselves for future exchange of aviation meteorological information in IWXXM.
